Maharashtra Shiv Bhojan Thali Yojana 2024 Expansion - Subsidized Meals at Rs. 10 to Poor People

Maharashtra government is planning to expand Shiv Bhojan Thali Yojana ahead of Lok Sabha elections. Under Shiv Bhojan Yojana 2024, the state govt. will offer subsidized meals at Rs. 10 to the needy people. As per the new plan, Maha govt will offer 10 lakh Shiv Bhojan thalis (meals) every day acrosss the state. Read this article till the end to know complete details about the subsidised thali scheme.

About Shiv Bhojan Thali Yojana 2024 in Maharashtra 

Shiv Bhojan Thali Yojana was launched by the former CM Uddhav Thackeray in the year 2020. This Shiv Bhojan Yojana is named after the Shivaji Maharaj who was the king who worked for the welfare of poor people. Currently, 2 lakh thalis are being offered to poor people. Now the state govt. is mulling to provide 10 lakh thalis every day across the state. Present Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has told the food and civil supply department to prepare a proposal to increase the number of thalis.
The thali which was earlier priced at Rs. 5 per plate and even served free in COVID pandemic outbreak, will now cost Rs. 10 to make it affordable for people to have full meal. As per the reports, there is a huge demand for the Shiv Bhojan thalis in the labour community, industrial areas and among migrant workers. 

Number of Shiv Bhojan Centres in Maharashtra

Maharashtra government is currently operating 1,886 Shiv Bhojan Centres across the state. Around 4.25 crore thalis have been served to the needy and poor people from April 01, 2023 to January 04,2024. "The current number is not enough to cover every needy person. Therefore, we have planned to increase from two lakh thalis to 10 lakh thalis," an official said. 

Officials from the food and civil supplies dept. said that they have prepared the proposal to increase the total number of thalis. It will be submitted to the chief minister’s office (CMO) this week. "Post this, the proposal will be tabled before the cabinet for its approval," the officials said.

Shiv Bhojan Scheme Menu

Under Shiv Bhojan Thali Yojana, each thali will have the following:- 
  • 2 chapatis
  • A bowl of rice
  • A bowl of Dal
  • A Vegetable

Shiv Bhojan Yojana is a Government of Maharashtra initiative to make affordable food easily available to all citizens. The scheme received state cabinet nod on 24 th December 2019 and a GR specifying the guidelines around the scheme was released on 1st January 2020. Under this scheme, a meal (thali) will be provided to citizens at a mere price of Rs.10. Each meal will comprise of two rotis, one vegetable curry, one rice bowl and one bowl of lentil.

Launch of Shiv Bhojan Yojana

In the year 2020, Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government had introduced "Shiv Bhojan" as its flagship scheme. The meal contains a bowl of rice and dal, a vegetable and two chapatis. The government has fixed Rs. 50 in urban areas and Rs. 35 in rural areas for each meal. The empanelled eateries, which are implementing this scheme, are paid the balance amount for each meal by the food and civil supply department.

After toppling of the MVA government, Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had announced a probe into the alleged malpractices in the scheme.
