About Tamil Nadu Free Dhoti and Saree Scheme 2024
Tamil Nadu govt. launches Free Dhoti and Saree Scheme 2024 for Thai Pongal festival. Under the TN Free Dhoti Saree Yojana, 1.77 crore dhoties and 1.77 crore sarees would be distributed to eligible beneficiaries this year. During the year 2012, the scheme of distribution of Free Dhoties and Sarees has been renamed as Priceless Sarees and Dhoties Scheme. This scheme aims to help the poor people and the weaving community.
Salient Features of Free Dhoti and Saree Tamil Nadu Scheme
- AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran firstly introduced the Free Dhoti and Saree Scheme in the year 1983.
- Main objective was to help the poor and economically weaker sections of the society.
- Tamilnadu Free Dhoti Saree scheme also provides employment opportunities to the poor people in the textile and handloom industry, particularly weaving community.

Need for Free Dhoti and Saree Scheme by TN Government
Thai Pongal is a major festival of Tamil Nadu which people wants to celebrate with joy and happiness. However, poor people cannot afford to celebrate it due to lack of money. Such poor people cannot purchase gifts for their loved ones. So to enable people to celebrate Pongal and remain connected with their culture, Tamil Nadu government has started various initiative like Pongal Gift Scheme, Free Dhoti and Saree Scheme etc.For the year 2024, Tamil Nadu CM M.K Stalin started Pongal Gift Hamper Scheme and Free Dhoti and Saree Scheme on 10 January 2024. In Pongal Gift Scheme, govt. will provide 1000 Rs. cash, 1 Kg rice, 1 Kg jaggery, 1 Sugarcane while in Free Dhoti and Saree Scheme, around 1.77 crore beneficiaries would get free dhoties and sarees from nearby ration shops.
This scheme also has benefit for the weaving community which is the largest occupation in Tamil Nadu after agriculture. As the govt. purchases sarees from weavers in TN state, so weaving community also gets an opportunity to earn money by supplying such a huge number of sarees and dhoties.
Background of Priceless Sarees and Dhoties Scheme in Tamilnadu
With a view towards benefitting the poor and with the objective of providing higher employment opportunities in the handloom, powerloom sector and to bring about renaissance, the scheme of distribution of supplying Priceless Sarees and Dhoties was introduced.
With a noble intention of supplying good quality Sarees and Dhoties to the poor, the production and distribution of polycotton Sarees and Dhoties were introduced in the year 2003. For Pongal 2005 the Government has extended the scheme of Free distribution of Sarees and Dhoties to all people living Below Poverty in Rural and Urban areas. During the year 2012, the scheme of distribution of Free Dhoties and Sarees has been renamed as Priceless Sarees and Dhoties Scheme.
