Cabinet committee on 29 Feb 2024 approved PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana in 1 cr households with an outlay of Rs. 75,021 crore. Prime Minister had launched the PM Surya Ghar Yojana earlier on 13 Feb 2024. Scheme provides a central financial assistance of 30,000 subsidy for 1 KW system, Rs. 60,000 for 2 KW systems, Rs. 78,000 for 3KW system or higher.

In addition to this, Model Solar Village will be developed in each district to act as role model for adoption of rooftop solar in rural areas.
From substantive subsidies, which will be given directly to people’s bank accounts, to heavily concessional bank loans, the Central Government will ensure that there is no cost burden on the people, the Prime Minister said earlier. All stakeholders will be integrated to a National Online Portal which will further convenience. PM Modi said that in order to popularise this scheme at the grassroots, urban local bodies and panchayats shall be incentivised to promote rooftop solar systems in their jurisdictions.

Solar energy is an important constituent of India’s ambitions of generating 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030. With overall solar energy generation getting traction in the last few years—capacity additions nearly doubled from 6,510 MW in 2019-20 to 12,760 MW in 2021-22. From the point of view of consumers as well as the overall cost of power and energy security, rooftop solar will play a significant role.

Need for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Scheme

India meets a sizable portion of its energy needs through coal-fired electricity, and this solar rooftop programme could be seen as an avenue to reduce the dependence of conventional sources of power.
At COP26 held in 2021, India committed to an ambitious five-part "Panchamrit" pledge. They included reaching 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity, generating half of all energy requirements from renewables, to reducing emissions by 1 billion tonnes by 2030. India as a whole also aims to reduce the emissions intensity of GDP by 45 per cent. Finally, India commits to net-zero emissions by 2070.

About 44% of India's energy requirements at present come from non-fossil sources and are likely to touch as high as 65% by 2030, much higher than what the country pledged at the COP summit in 2021, So, to ensure that energy requirements are met through solar power generation, the central govt. has launched PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana which will benefit India in long run.

PM earlier announced to launch this scheme in the name of Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojana, read here - PM Surya Ghar Yojana Announcement
